Global level

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the leading international body for the assessment of climate change. It was established by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in 1988 to provide the world with a clear scientific view on the current state of knowledge in climate change and its potential environmental and socio-economic impacts. The last Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) : https://www.ipcc.ch/report/ar5/

World Meteorological Organization (WMO) : contributions on Climate topics (Climate Data and Monitoring, Climate Prediction and Outlooks, Climate Change, World Climate Programme, Commission for Climatology, etc)

weAdapt is an online ‘open space' on climate adaptation issues which allows practitioners, researchers and policy makers to access credible, high quality information and to share experiences and lessons learned with the weADAPT community. weADAPT is the result of collaboration with knowledge partners from bilateral, multilateral, NGO and commercial parties.

EcoAdapt is a nonprofit organization based in Washington, USA. It offers an interactive online database – the Climate Adaptation Knowledge Exchange (CAKE).

European PLATFORM

The Climate-ADAPT Platform supports the 2013 EU Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change to improve the sharing of the knowledge base on climate change impacts, vulnerability and adaptation (CCIVA) in Europe. The Platform allows users and providers to freely access and share data and information on:

  • observed and expected climate change in Europe and and current and future vulnerability of regions and sectors;

  • adaptation case studies and potential adaptation options;

  • tools that support adaptation planning ( Maps, graphs and datasets, Indicators );

  • EU, national and transnational adaptation strategies and actions;

  • relevant EU policy frameworks and processes.

  • Publications and reports, Research and knowledge projects, Case studies.

Mayors Adapt is an initiative of the European Commission’s Directorate General Climate Action. It is launched in the context of the EU Adaptation Strategy and is implemented within the Covenant of Mayors,

The new integrated Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy was launched by the European Commission on 15 October 2015. The three pillars of the strengthened Covenant - mitigation, adaptation, and secure, sustainable and affordable energy - were symbolically endorsed on this occasion.

ICLEI Europe Topic on Climate Change Adaptation ICLEI is an interface between various levels of government - from the European Union to the local level - as well as between research, policy and practice. ICLEI is committed to supporting cities, towns and urban regions in their efforts to develop adaptation strategies and action plans.

Copernicus Climate Change Service The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) is still in the development phase and will combine observations of the climate system with the latest science to develop authoritative, quality-assured information about the past, current and future states of the climate in Europe and worldwide.

NETWORKING with other European Projects

Relevant past projects on Adaptation

ACT LIFE The main focus of the ACT project was on developing a process for an effective municipal strategy for local climate change adaptation measures. The project developed guidelines and Road Map for the Local Adaptation Plans

BASE Project The EU research project "Bottom-Up Climate Adaptation Strategies Towards a Sustainable Europe" (BASE) supports action for sustainable climate change adaptation in Europe

CLIMWATADAPT the project, which ran from January 2010 to August 2011, addressed a number of the strategic issues and knowledge gaps identified in the White Paper on Adaptation (2009). This project addressed two target groups: Policy makers on the EU-level, and water managers on the river basin level.

CLIMSAVE it is a pan-European project that is developing a user-friendly, interactive web-based tool that will allow stakeholders to assess climate change impacts and vulnerabilities for a range of sectors, including agriculture, forests, biodiversity, coasts, water resources and urban development.

ECLISE is a collaborative FP7 research project and the central objective of ECLISE is to take the first step towards the realisation of a European Climate Service. ECLISE provides climate services for several climate-vulnerable regions in Europe, organized at a sectorial level: cities, water resources, coastal defence and energy production.

EU Projects reported by SEC – ADAPT partners:

INTACT
it brings together innovative and cutting edge knowledge and experience in Europe in order to develop and demonstrate best practices in engineering, materials construction, planning and designing protective measures as well as crisis response and recovery capabilities.

RESIN it is an interdisciplinary, practice-based research project investigating climate resilience in European cities. The project aims to compare and evaluate the methods that can be used to plan for climate adaptation in order to move towards formal standardisation of adaptation strategies.

FIESTA (Family Intelligent Energy Saving Targeted Action“)Fiesta partnership is committed to support families in the reduction of their home energy consumption. Particular attention is paid to the involvement of vulnerable consumers (such as families with low income, living in social housing and similar)

EMPOWERING the project contributes to the shift of 6 EU regions toward low-carbon society by enhancing the capacities of municipalities and regional representatives to shape integrated energy strategies and plans.

DRINKADRIA The project studies territorial vulnerability and long- and short-term methods to safeguard water resources.

LIFE URBAN-ADAPT The project will demonstrate an innovative, participatory approach to the large-scale implementation of urban adaptation strategies and related measures in order bolster acceptance among the public and stakeholders.

LIFE PRIMES the project aims to build resilient communities through their engagement and proactive participation in the operations of early warning and flood risk prevention measures.

LIFE ADAPT2CLIMA The project aims to facilitate the development of adaptation strategies for agriculture by deploying and demonstrating an innovative decision support tool.

MOVESMART The project aims at providing time-dependent route planning and renewable personal mobility services using a set of crowd-sourcing tools for collecting real-time information by multimodal travellers

SIMPLA (Website is under construction) The aim of the project is to increase the capacity of the public administration in the planning and implementation of energy efficiency policies and measures. It aims to do so through the creation of preconditions for better integration of Sustainable Energy Action Plans (SEAPs) and Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs).

EH-CMap (Advanced Training on Energy Efficiency in Historic Heritage) Energy retrofit of historic buildings implies the coordination of different skills and professional capacities, in order to ensure a correct approach to both the issues of correct preservation of cultural heritage and effective improvement of energy performances. EH-CMAP aims at testing an educational tool helping higher education students in developing a holistic approach to the energy retrofit of historic buildings, with a particular focus on the Mediterranean region.

E-RESPLAN ( Innovative Educational Tools for Energy Planning); E-RESPLAN is a Strategic Partnership for Higher Education in the field of energy planning, RES development and spatial planning.

LIFE DERRIS The project aims to transfer knowledge from insurance companies to public administrations and SMEs in terms of risk assessment and risk management for catastrophic weather events in order to create ‘resilient companies’.

LIFE IRIS project aims to support enterprises in the Emilia-Romagna region, particularly SMEs, in their efforts to become more resilient to extreme weather events. It will also test the effectiveness of adaptation measures applied through a cluster approach (by industrial sector and supply chain) and foster the diffusion of financial tools aiming to reward resilient enterprises or sectors.

RAMSES The main aim of this research project is to deliver much needed quantified evidence of the impacts of climate change and the costs and benefits of a wide range of adaptation measures, focusing on cities. RAMSES will engage with stakeholders to ensure this information is policy relevant and ultimately enables the design and implementation of adaptation strategies in the EU and beyond.The project will focus on climate impacts and adaptation strategies pertinent to urban areas due to their high social and economic importance.
